The Iron Content of the Whole Blood of Normal Individuals

چکیده
During t.he course of an investigation involving the determination of blood iron values in normal subjects, it became evident that t.he results were consistently higher than the figures recently reported for human blood by Murphy, Lynch, and Howard (1) and Reich and Tiedemann (2). Furt, hermore, hemoglobin values calculat,ed on the basis of their iron determinations differed considerably from values obtained by them, with t,he Sahli and Newcomer methods. Oxygen capacit,y figures calculated from their iron determinat, ions were also lower t,han those generally considered normal in the literature. Since the oxygen capacity method is the standard method of determining the hemoglobin content of blood, simultaneous determinations of oxygen capacity by the Van Slyke and Neil1 method (3) and iron determinations by the Kennedy method (4) were made on the blood of a series of normal men and women. Since the completion of this work, Sachs, Levine, and Appelsis (5), using the Wong met.hod (6), have reported iron values for the blood of normal men that are in accord with the data recorded in this paper, although their figures for normal women are definitely lower. In order to determine whether the discrepancies in the iron values quoted in the papers above might be explained by the methods used for estimating t,he iron content, a comparison was also made between t.he Kennedy and t,he Wong methods.

Low Dose, Short-Term Iron Supplementation in Female Blood Donors of Childbearing Age: a Randomized, Double-Masked, Placebo-Controlled Study
: Iron supplementation for blood donors is a controversial concept. However, to maintain regular blood donors, as a source of blood supply, the present paradigm is not appropriate and dose not prevent harms to blood donors. Methods: A randomized, double-masked, placebo-controlled study, was conducted by enrolling 95 female regular blood donors of childbearing age (18-49 years). The participants...
متن کاملEffect of consumption of whole bread baked from cultivated wheat with microfertilizers on blood indices of Iron
Conclusion: In age group of 5-12 no significant difference was observed between the two kinds of wheat. Introduction: Iron deficiency anemia is one of the most common problems in the world. This study was carried out to determine the effect of consumption of whole bread baked from cultivated wheat with microfertilizers on blood indices of iron . Materials and Methods: In this field trial and ...
متن کاملSerum Iron Concentration in Children with Giardiasis
SUMMARY Giardia is a protozoan parasite which exists in the small intestine in man. This parasite could act as a barrier against fat absorption. It also results in anemia as a result of interference with folic acid vitamin B6 and probably iron absorption. In this study a total of 198 infested and 35 noninfested school children were studied for serum Iron and TIBC. The results showed the Iron...
متن کاملThe Influence of Iron Loading and Iron Chelation on the Proliferation and Telomerase Activity of Human Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells
Background: Iron is an essential trace element in cell proliferation. Several investigations demonstrate that iron deprivation inhibits cell proliferation. However, the impact of iron on telomerase activity of activated lymphocytes remains unexplained to date. Objective: In this study, the effect of iron on the proliferation and telomerase activity of lymphocytes stimulated by phytohemagglutini...
متن کاملThe Correlation between Type of Delivery and Umbilical Cord Blood Hemoglobin and Hematocrit in Full- Term Neonates
Introduction: Neonates with lower hemoglobin and Hematocrit are more at risk of iron deficiency anemia. This rate is influenced by several factors. Children's health can be improved by identifying these factors and taking appropriate actions. This study determined the relationship between type of delivery and umbilical cord blood hemoglobin and Hematocrit. Methods: This descriptive correlation...
